We are all aware that the diabetes problem in
Mauritius is unprecedented and that the solution can only be brought through
quality research and innovation which can measure up to the extent of the
problem. I therefore acclaim this bold, innovative initiative of the young
researchers of l’Université des Mascareignes for their leadership in the
development of this project proposal.
The Project is designed to transform the manner in
which diabetes can be monitored and controlled, through the use of mobile and
web technologies. This will help improve the prevention and management of
diabetes through a feasible system that aims at closely monitoring the
patient’s glucose level. The expertise and knowledge thus gained will improve
the quality of care for people with diabetes, whilst strengthening the health
system in Mauritius.
I am also pleased to state that this project brings
together various actors of the system in an effective partnership: namely
university researchers, linking with NGOs, health facilities, hospitals,
doctors, nutritionists assigned by the Ministry of Heath and Quality of Life
and the Mauritius Institute of Health. It is a concrete example of the linkages
and synergies that I have always fostered at the level of my ministry, to
ensure that the output of university research contribute to the strengthening
of the quality of life of citizens of this country.
As Minister of the Tertiary Education, Science,
Research and technology, I have always advocated that Research brings hope and
improves the welfare of people. I am confident that the research results of
this Project will provide hope to patients suffering from diabetes and to their
families
Thank You.
