I launched a Half-day Seminar organized in the context of the International Council for Science (ICSU) Regional Committee for Africa Meeting ,held at the Cyber Tower 1, Ebene in presence of Dr. Edith Madela-Mntla, Director, ICSU Regional Office for Africa, Dr. A. Suddhoo, Executive  Director, Mauritius Research Council and other eminent personalities. The seminar also includes the participation of DIREKT (Small Developing Island Renewable Energy Knowledge and Technology Transfer Network), which focuses on the issue of renewable energy, of great relevance for the socio-economic development of the ACP small island developing states. DIREKT has a scheme of cooperation scheme among the universities of Germany, Fiji, Mauritius, Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago. This scheme makes effective use of technology transfer, information exchange and networking. This programme is supported by the European Union and the ACP countries. I would wish to see more of such schemes and networking between countries which can share the more advanced knowledge of Science and technology. This is the first time that the ICSU Regional Committee for Africa is holding its meeting in Mauritius. I wish all the distinguished members a warm welcome and hope that they will be able to enjoy our wonderful island in spite of their tight schedules.
