This is the first time that young researchers from
Mauritius, Miss Naziah Jaufeerally and Miss Aazra Oomayya Pankanis (currently
studying in Malaysia and whose parents were present) have the opportunity to
participate in such a meeting which brings together young researchers selected
from around the world and distinguished Nobel laureates. This participation of
Mauritian students in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Council meeting is an important
aspect of our strategy to promote science and technology. We are encouraging
more students to study science and technology as we need more specialized
skills in all fields and want to encourage innovation. This is equally an
opportunity for us to promote research, which is one of the main criteria to
improve quality and the ranking of our universities. The two candidates from
Mauritius should be seen as role models by younger students. I
would say that they are getting an exciting and unique chance. I understand
that an alumni directory is being constituted and they will be the first
Mauritians to feature in the database. I encourage them to interact with the scientists
and colleagues students from other countries and come back with new ideas and
research projects. They have our full support and encouragement.
