It gave me immense pleasure to be at Albion Fisheries Research Centre, Albion for the launching of the first seaweed experimental farm in Mauritius. On this occasion a workshop is being held to train the local personnel and local fisherman community in seaweed farming. It is a pleasure to learn that the participants for the workshop include members of the public and private sectors as well as parastatal bodies, academia and very importantly the fisherman’s community. At the end of this workshop I understand that the stakeholders will acquire the basic skills involved from site selection for seaweed farming to setting up of a seaweed farm including farming methods, addressing problems (both social and environmental), working with communities and managing a seaweed farm. I have no doubt that with the commitment shown by the various institutions to this program a new industry will pave its way to contribute towards economic growth and a better livelihood especially for the coastal communities. I welcome this effort towards innovation and a new local industry. This is a first step in a new field. Good luck and success to all institutions involved in this exciting new endeavor !

LAUNCHING OF “ENDEMIC AND MEDICINAL PLANT GARDEN”
I was very pleased to be among them this morning for the Opening Ceremony of the Endemic and Medicinal Plant Garden at the University of Mauritius. I recall that the idea to set up such a garden was rooted early this year at the level of my Ministry. Congratulations to the Faculty of Agriculture for this very laudable initiative in the promotion of endemic and medicinal plants for the benefit of our students and society at large .I am convinced that the garden will represent a window to the society and raise awareness among the public on the different endemic flora species that exist in the island. To-day’s event is a milestone in the history of this University and is a major step towards creating and promoting a culture of endemic and medicinal plants for the national development of our country
‘Convocation day for the School of Innovative Technologies and Engineering, UTM ‘
I was, immensely proud to be present at the 10th Annual Convocation Ceremony of the School of Innovative Technologies and Engineering of the University of Technology, Mauritius. Congratulations to the students for having successfully completed their academic studies at the university. They are now better equipped to achieve success in their chosen field. I would here, like to share with them some inspiring words by the owner of Dell computers, Michael Dell: “Now it’s time for you to move on to what’s next. You must not let anything deter you from taking those first steps. Don’t spend so much time trying to choose the perfect opportunity, that you miss the right opportunity. Recognize that there will be failures, and acknowledge that there will be obstacles. But you will learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others, for there is very little learning in success.” I seize this opportunity to extend my appreciation to the staff of the University for their contribution in their success and also for putting in place a robust framework for producing quality professionals in the fields of Information Technology, Science, Engineering and Management.
